"Travelers receive an individual invite for each travel item (flight, car rental) with reservation details, as well as an automated online check-in reminder 24 hours prior to travel, and calendar updates if travel plans change," according to a spokeswoman.

Travelport will provide travel agents with "fully automated" hotel commission processing through Galileo and Worldspan, aiming to increase commissions to travel agents by as much as 40 percent. Through a partnership with hotel commission recovery and reconciliation service Net Trans, Travelport announced it would recoup commissions "wherever in the world the hotel booking is done," and offer agents monthly data.

The National Business Travel Association named former Hudson Crossing partner and Lodging.com executive Edward Silver as the association's and NBTA Foundation's chief technology officer. Former American Industrial Hygiene Association executive Diane Young will become vice president of finance and controller, responsible for "growing NBTA finance and accounting processes and resources." According to FlightStats, US Airways in February had the highest cancellation rate among major U.S. carriers at 6.24 percent of scheduled flights. Among U.S. regional operators, US Airways subsidiary Piedmont Airlines for the second consecutive month had the highest cancellation rate (13.68 percent), followed by Delta subsidiary Comair (12.55 percent).

Alaska Airlines in February was the most punctual major U.S. carrier, with an on-time performance of 85 percent, according to FlightStats. Achieving a top ranking for a third consecutive month, Alaska was followed by Frontier Airlines (81 percent), United Airlines (78 percent) and Southwest Airlines (78 percent). JetBlue Airways (66 percent) for a third consecutive month ranked worst among the 10 largest carriers.

Continental Airlines said beginning March 17 it would offer an option at check-in to buy "premium seat assignments for unreserved economy-class seats that feature extra legroom," such as exit-row seats. Elite frequent flyer members can "continue to assign themselves seats with extra legroom in economy class without charge," the airline said.

TripIt launched a free company groups function allowing participating business travelers to see on a map where co-workers are traveling. TripIt already enabled more than 1,000 groups for companies with large numbers of users, "and will create more groups upon request." Those enrolling on the site are asked whether they are a traveler, travel arranger or company travel manager. "Employees must have a valid company email address to join their company's group, can only see travel dates and locations of others in their group, and always have the option of not sharing a trip with their group," according to TripIt.

Amtrak said it launched Wi-Fi service on Acela trains between Boston and Washington and in gate areas of six major stations, free of charge for an introductory period. Four ClubAcela lounges also are part of the "initially" complimentary offer, which "will be reviewed based on customer demand and system performance." Amtrak said on-board Wi-Fi "typically outperforms cellular air cards and smart phones," and is compatible with "most" standard corporate networks. Gate-area coverage is available at Baltimore Penn Station, New York Penn Station, Philadelphia 30th Street Station, Providence Station, Route 128 Station in Boston and Washington Union Station. Service at Wilmington Station awaits the completion of station renovations in early 2011.
